The twin antenna contract was signed at the Agora in Novi Sad this April, marking a thrilling milestone for us all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To celebrate, we interviewed one of our newest members, <\/span><b>Reio Treve<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who shares his unforgettable experiences from the cultural exchange in Eindhoven last November \u2013 his first ever international AEGEE event. Dive into his story and join us in this vibrant new era of international friendship and adventure!<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-36462c2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"36462c2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Why did you decide to take part in the cultural exchange with AEGEE-Eindhoven?<\/b><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a0e39f4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a0e39f4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had rarely travelled outside of Estonia, except for the coming-of-age ritual of taking the ferry from Tallinn to Helsinki and then to Stockholm. Besides that, I\u2019ve only been to the UK. AEGEE offers the opportunity not only to see Europe affordably but also to take part in the various activities our friends across the continent have prepared for us. I knew there had been talks about signing a twin local agreement with Eindhoven, so I thought to myself: If the first cultural exchange coming up is in Eindhoven, and we\u2019re going to be a twin local, then that\u2019s a clear sign that I must visit the place!<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-09f459c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"09f459c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li><b>What were your expectations of your first international AEGEE event?<\/b><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f97e20d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f97e20d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was only just getting used to the people in AEGEE-Tartu, but I was excited to see the kinds of people that have joined AEGEE elsewhere. My expectation was to understand whether the organisation I joined locally fits the vibe elsewhere as well.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5eac59e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5eac59e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li><b>Based on your experience, how would you explain cultural exchange to someone who has never heard of it before?<\/b><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bf097e3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bf097e3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a bit different than going from Tartu to Tallinn. I\u2019m kidding, it\u2019s more than that \u2013 you\u2019re actually able to have a walk or ride a bike in Eindhoven. No, but seriously, even the people seem to smile more over in the West. As for the cultural exchange part itself: one part is your own initiative to find things to explore, but visiting other locals with AEGEE provides a clear programme of various activities you can do \u2013 it\u2019s a guided tour of an entire culture. Cultural nuances open themselves for you by interacting with the locals, tasting food, and visiting places \u2013 an experience that AEGEE excels at.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9d5bfe5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9d5bfe5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Can you provide an overview of the cultural exchange programme that you had in Eindhoven? What were some of the main activities or events included in the cultural exchange programme agenda during your stay there?<\/b><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-66a05f0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"66a05f0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Straight off the bat, we headed for a bike rental. With bikes they gave us a city tour. Oddly enough, I don\u2019t think we saw any canals, we were told that Eindhoven is one of the few Dutch cities that lacks them compared to the neighbouring cities. The bike tour concluded once we returned to the campus. On the campus their office was locked, but next doors they were preparing for the main event \u2013 homemade kapsalon. I will return later to go in depth about what the experience was like, but we ended up playing games and chit-chatting throughout the evening. And the evening must conclude with the night \u2013 a night at Stratum! Stratum is what the R\u00fc\u00fctli street is for Tartu. But, it seems that the Dutch might be rowdier than the quiet and self-centred Estonians, since the entrance to the street was guarded by fully geared-up Dutch policemen. Anyway, it was great. We visited many bars and clubs, most memorable was the visit to the empty gay-friendly club \u2013 we entered, danced for a minute or two, and headed to the next club.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the second day, we went bouldering. I am ashamed to admit it, but it was my first time bouldering \u2013 and I loved it! My climbing grade was V3 \u2013 counts as intermediate? Kristie and Max from AEGEE-Eindhoven showed us how it\u2019s done though\u2026 they were amazing. In the evening, we visited the Hubble Community Caf\u00e9, which is on the campus. We had a couple rounds of drinks, it was great \u2013 especially welcoming was the discount given to AEGEE members! After that, we went to their office for a pub quiz on the Dutch language. It was a series of rounds composed of raw translations of Dutch words into English, such as: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stofzuiger<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2192 \u201cdust sucker\u201d \u2192 vacuum cleaner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last day started off with a toastie lunch, after which we played games and went shopping. Were there any surprises or differences in culture that you encountered during your visit?<\/b><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-081bfe8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"081bfe8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without a doubt it was when we <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ourselves<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made kapsalon. I\u2019ll try to give you an explanation of what the kapsalon is. I think even the Dutch themselves are confused by its origins, but by the story they gave us it seems to have gone something along the lines of this: a man used to go to a shawarma store to get \u201chis usual\u201d \u2013 so the shopkeeper would shout to the kitchen: \u201cregular order for the kapsalon\u201d. Others began wondering what \u201ckapsalon\u201d was, and so they asked for it as well. As for what the kapsalon <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026 well, we got to make it ourselves! From bottom to top, we got to choose how to put the ingredients in a take-away tray. I did it like so: french fries, gyro meat, tomatoes and other vegetables \u2013 and it was necessary to top it all off with cheese. It tasted great!<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2bfe926 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2bfe926\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Was there anything that you learned about yourself due to the cultural exchange?\u00a0<\/b><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-59caa25 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"59caa25\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think it\u2019s self-evident that there are to be found welcoming people across artificial boundaries, but it always hits you again as soon as you click with somebody \u2013 who might seem on the outset to be of a completely different background \u2013 and you recognise their similarities. I remember fondly how we met the folks at AEGEE-Eindhoven.
