On a local level there is at least one event every week, where every member is welcome. There are different kinds of events - for example, a culture night once a month, where we get more acquainted with one European country’s language, food etc. Also, there are often workshops, discussions or get-togethers in a more free atmosphere to strengthen the team spirit. Even though most of the events are only for our members, we sometimes organise public ones as well. One of AEGEE-Tartu’s tradition is the annual bog hike.
It is highly recommended for our members to be part of a working group to overcome challenges, get new skills and knowledge and to contribute to the functioning of AEGEE yourself. In the working groups you can, for example, deal with local events or organising a Summer University, managing sponsorships, our blog, members or writing a newsletter.
There are no mandatory events in AEGEE except Agora, so every member can decide themselves on which and on how many events they would like to take part of.
Local Agora is AEGEE-Tartu’s general assembly, which is the only mandatory event for our members. It takes place two times a year - usually in December and June. At the Agora there will be given an overview of board’s and working groups’ doings during half a year, presentation of an action plan and budget for the next semester. Also, decisions that need the approval of the majority of members will be approved or rejected. At Summer Agora a new board for the upcoming academic year will be elected.
Local Training Course (LTC)
Local Training Course is necessary for newer and a bit older members to better understand the structure and functioning of our organisation’s local and European level. The training is two-level - for the beginners and the advanced - and lasts for 1-2 days per each level. The main aim of LTC1 is the integration of members to our antenna, introducing more closely the nature and history of the organisation. LTC2 helps the members understand better, how to contribute to the functioning of our antenna and the organisation in general and offers a chance to develop yourself in terms of communication and dealing with different projects.
Culture night is an event occurring at least once a month for which we choose a different country as a theme every time. The night will be hosted by a member of that culture or someone local who is well acquainted with that. During the event food and drinks from that country are being offered and sometimes you can even cook it yourself. In addition, there are quizzes on fun facts, small presentations on that culture and opportunities to learn phrases in a new language.
Bog hike and bike trip
It has become a tradition that every autumn we organise a bog hike and every spring a bike trip. For the bog hike we choose a bog nearby, spend a day there playing games, having a picnic and of course hiking. In the evening we will go to someone’s country house or a tourist farm, where we can cozily spend our time together and warm ourselves up in sauna. Bike trip takes place in spring and is similar to bog hike, but instead of hiking in a bog we will get to and away from the countryside by riding a bicycle. In a cottage we can forget the exam stress for a weekend and strengthen our organisational team spirit.
European events are organised by AEGEE antennae or the European bodies of AEGEE. These can be anything like projects, trainings, conferences, meetings, cultural exchanges etc that bring together young people from all around Europe. European events are accessible only for AEGEE members.
We will now describe some well-known formats of European events, however this is not a finite list and one-off events are also common. You can have a look at the map of antennae in order to get an idea where the events might take place.
Agora is the main general assembly of AEGEE-Europe where all antennae send their delegates. It welcomes the biggest number of participants of all events. Agora takes place twice a year - in spring and autumn. During the Agora, important decisions are made regarding the future of AEGEE, board reports and projects are either approved or rejected; during the spring Agora a new board (called Comité Directeur) is elected for AEGEE-Europe. In addition to that, workshops and discussions take place. Besides the hard work, participants also have the opportunity to discover the host city and participate in a social or cultural program in the evenings.
European Planning Meeting
EPM (European Planning Meeting) takes place in the first half of each year and its aim is to put together the draft of Action Agenda for the following year. In addition to that, workshops and discussions are held on the topic of the specific EPM. In the evenings there is a cultural or social program.
NWM (Network Meeting), as the name suggests, is a meeting of antennae of a certain region. It consists of discussions and trainings regarding different aspects of AEGEE. It is said to be the best event for getting a grasp of AEGEE as a whole and learning from more experienced members. NWMs also include discussions on the problems of specific antennae and finding possible solutions for them. It also creates a great base for further cooperation. The topics of a NWM may include project management, public relations, fundraising, public speaking, NGO management or discussions on current topics like youth unemployment, student mobility or education. There’s also a social or cultural program every evening.
Summer University (SU) is the oldest and most popular project of AEGEE. SUs are organised every year in a wide range of European cities, giving more than 2000 young people an opportunity to travel. SU is a cultural exchange lasting for about two weeks that promotes tolerance and open-mindedness among young people. In addition to a fantastic cultural and social program, each SU has a theme which can be for example a language, European integration, international politics, active citizenship or personal development.
Summer Course (SC): A SU with a specific theme
Summer Course Plus (SC+): An intensive course where professional trainers are involved
Travelling Summer University (TSU): A cultural trip during which at least four places are visited.
Summer Break (SB): About one week course with less training hours than in SC.
Read more about Summer University here.
Trainings in AEGEE are usually organised by AEGEE-Academy which consists of AEGEE members that are trained to train others. Each training has a specific theme, such as project management, public relations, fundraising etc. The focus tends to be on leadership and soft skills. Since the trainers are students themselves, the training sessions don’t look like passive lectures but are rather interactive. And obviously there’s a social or cultural program in the evenings.
New Year Event
NYE (New Year Event) is an event that overlaps with the New Year’s Eve. It is a social kind of event that gives you an opportunity to celebrate the new year in another European city and discover its traditions of celebration together with a bunch of international friends. Depending on the climate, the event may feature some cool winter activities.
Cultural exchange is an event in two parts that is organised between two antennae if there is mutual interest. Cultural exchange is a mutual visit lasting for about 4 days, during which the hosting antenna organises a cultural program for the visiting delegation. In addition to discovering the culture and language, an important focus is on social bonding. Cultural exchange can lay a base for further cooperation. In order to organise it, a temporary working group is formed at the local level.
Regional Training Course
Regional Training Course (RTC) is aimed to develop the competences of the members and provide them with skills. This event, for the first time with this brand new concept, is the best chance for you to have a better knowledge of different fields in order to spread a new method inside your local and to grow as person.
